Quick Overview

Dunhill Abu Simbel is a Limited Edition pipe from 2013 created on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the rediscovery of Abu Simbel temples, in Southern Egypt.

Construction of the temple complex at Abu Simbel started in approximately 1264 BC and lasted for about 20 years, until 1244 BC. Known as the "Temple of Ramesses, beloved by Amun" it was one of six rock temples erected in Nubia during the long reign of Ramesses II.

With the passage of time, the temples became covered by sand and were forgotten until 1813, when Swiss scholar Jean-Louis Burckhardt found the top frieze of the main temple. Burckhardt talked about his discovery with his friend Italian explorer Giovanni Belzoni, who traveled to the site, but was unable to dig out an entry to the temple. Belzoni returned in 1817, this time succeeding in his attempt to enter the complex.

Abu Simbel, however, was not the name given to the site during antiquity. Many believe that Abu Simbel was the name of a young local boy who guided these early re-discoverers to the site of the buried temple which he had seen from time to time in the shifting sands. Eventually, they named the complex after him.

The Abu Simbel pipe is a Group 4 Quaint shape in Shell Briar finish, fitted with a Sterling Silver hallmarked band decorated with the engraving 'Abu Simbel 1813-2013'. The shape of the pipe bowl is inspired by the pillars of ancient Egypt.

The accompanying Sterling Silver tamper is shaped like a pharaonic column.

The pipe is housed in a special leather case and is accompanied by the book "Egypt: Art & Architecture" by Regine Schulz.

The pipe is limited to only 200 individually numbered pieces, and comes in the original presentation box and outer box, complete with all paperwork.
